40HP Johnson Questions

I was looking at a used boat with a couple of possible concerns.

1. When I checked the lower grease, it was a little questionable as far as water intrusion. I have seen much worse, but there was some water in the grease. More importantly, there were about a dozen small slivers of steel attached to the magnet on the screw. As far as the water, if I recall correctly, there was no sealing washer, so I am not to panicked on that issue.

2. I am somewhat ignorant about power trim/tilt. The motor has a large hydrallic cylinder that would appear to raise and lower the motor. It does not seem to do anything, but the bleed off does function. Where would I look for the pump and reservior if any exists? There are only two apprent connections to the lift cylinder. One is an electrical connection that appears to be merely a ground. It is a single wire (approximately 14 or 16 gauge)which terminates to a stud in the frame of the lift mechanism. The other is a tube that connects to the bleed valve. The shift/throttle has raise and lower buttons on it.

The boat that it is on is a Bass Tracker pro17 serial number BUJ40369J889. the motor is a "Johnson Tracker" 40HP model number TJ40ELCEC, serial number G102283607.

Thanks,
Terry

Re: 40HP Johnson Questions

1. The water intrusion may or may not be an easy fix. The crush washers are one of the main spots for water intrusion, so it may be easy indeed. If you do get it, use full synthetic lu oil, along with new gaskets, test run it, then check the drain screw. The water is heavier than the oil and will sit beneath it, exiting first when the drain screw is removed. The slivers of metal are worriesome. There should be nothing larger than 'peach fuzz' on the magent, for lack of a better analogy.

2. The pump is directly beneath the trim motor, and the resevoir beneath them both. The resevoir is filled via the large slot scew on the face of the resevoir. Click the link, then follow the prompts to your specific model outboard. Click on Power Tilt and Trim for the exploded diagram and descriptions.

Re: 40HP Johnson Questions

Very interesting...

If I recall correctly, there was only a cylinder, not motor or anything on that side of the motor. Could this just be a damping mechanism to lower the motor slowly?

As far as the slivers, they were NOT peach fuzz, more like about 1/4 inch long by about 0.015"

I think it is time to keep looking. I was considering going in with a low-ball offer, but I think not.

Thanks,
Terry
