40horsepower water pump replacement

i need to change the water pump in my 1998 yamaha 40 outboard i know i have to put in neutral do i loosen the cable at the lower unit and seperate i need a little insite

On my C40TLRX all that is needed is to remove the bolts and drop lower unit. The shift linkage just slides apart no need to undo anything on linkage. Just make sure both are in neutral when going back together.
