There is a class of racing inflatables that uses that model. In general, race classes are tailored to a specific engine....I.E. It's fixed by the people who write the guidelines for the specs to favor one manufacturer's engine model over another in each class. Usually Mercury "assists" in developing the class specs...Therefore, that one brand is favored more than another :)

The 40D is the 3 cyl 2-stroke, correct? I bet it is much smoother running for trolling. The 40C shakes preety good, at trolling speeds.

The D is a three cylinder. It was developed for the recreational boater to replace the 40 C in the U.S.
