Hi all I just bought a 14 ft 1980 MirroCraft boat with a 402 mercury outboard i’m guessing it’s around the same year as the boat and it’s a 40hp for $750 . The problem is the last owner said after running it for a while it overheats and then dies and then is hard starting . what’s the first things i should check or replace guessing atleast the water pump impeller but what else . Also should the premix oil be 50-1

Any used motor need to have the impeller serviced prior to using the motor.

Pull the lower and do a water pump service

With the previous Owner saying it Overheats, I would have thanked him for his time, and drove away, quickly.

For $750 i still think it’s a good deal ,you don’t see a lot cheap aluminium boats up here in Canada most like I have are in the $2k range
