40 hp yamaha outboard issues

2 stroke maybe 2002 trl model...it runs for a an hour or two running crab traps then will sputter and die ....wont restart til it cools down.Do you think this is the ecm or a coil getting hot and causing the ecm to do this...

I would lean towards ignition coils first. Do some research here and on the web for a test procedure to help isolate the problem to the coils, wouldn't want to just throw parts at it.

I would test the alarm system to make sure that is working just for the heck of it.Overheat or low oil will not shut it down, but it is nice to know it works.

Does it loose spark when it shuts down and will not start back up?

testing inputs and out puts of the CDI should lead you to what the problem is , if it is loosing spark

a complete model# will tell you and us what year it is
