hey guys....i got a 92 or 93 evy 40 hp and the last 2 or 3 times ive had it out its been acting up a bit...its becoming kinda hard to start and smokes severly on start up like its loadin up and floodin out..once running it trys to die and takes some messing with to keep it going but after it warms its fine all day. i had the carbs rebuilt 2 years ago and its always smoked pretty good at start up but not this bad before....my starting procedure is pump oil, pump gas, push primer in for 8 secs and try to start...what do you guys think...do i need new plugs or am i running really rich? thanks in advance

Excessive smoking is a sign of a failing fuel pump. If you have the VRO system intact, and the fuel side is failing, it will start to pump more oil and less gas making it smokey and hard starting.

Change the plugs, but I think a fuel pump rebuild kit is in order.

i took the plugs out and they are a dark tan color, not black, and were slightly wet with gas and oil...they werent in terrible shape but not really good either

Do not pump the oil bulb before you start it. This is probably your problem with excess smoke. Once primed, you're good to go. No need to pump the oil bulb every time....

You should also raise the fast idle lever during starting. Especially cold starts.

Just so we are clear. That would be correct. Do not pump the oil bulb at all. The only time you would need to pump it would be after service is done to the oil tank or if there were other problems requiring oil component servicing(Hoses, Fittings, Etc).
