I purchased a 14 Anchor "runabout" with a Mercury 40 horse outboard. They are a great match. The boat is in great shape but the engine may need to be replaced soon. I think they are both 30 or 40 years old. How does one match up a boat with a motor? Will a modern 40 hp motor provide more "zip". Would a modern 50 or 60 hp be too large for this boat. I would like to be able to pull an adult on skis or a knee board. Thanks for your help.

chant,<br /> Yes a newer 40 HP motor will have alot more power than your old one! As far as a 50-60 HP, I don't know what your boat is rated for. Best not to exceed it, although I have a 1967 Wellcraft 14' open bow that I run a 60 HP on. Just depends on the boat! But that's what mine came with, and was the original motor, so I figured it was OK. Never had a problem with weight or anything. I guess your boat does not have a placard telling you the max. HP rating? There are formulas to determine what your boat will handle, but I don't remember where I saw them. Good Luck,
