Hi, I have a red band 40 HP Mercury (approx mid 70's I think)
the motor will start and idle very roughly. When you put it into forward gear and try and accelerate the motor just dies. I have had a look at the carby & stripped it down - all ok. There doesn't seem to be any response at the butterfly when you actually throttle down - the warm up lever does have an effect though. Is there likely to be something that has become disconected or broken off?
The other thing I have noticed is that there is signs of moisture in the lower cyclinder (the fuel is fresh & clean) could this water be getting in from the water jacket?
Hope someone can help

thanks in anticipation

G'Day, Sensible.

If I understand you correctly, your control is not opening the throttle, yet the warm-up lever does.

If that is the case, you have a loose connection (maybe broken) to the throttle cable in your control box.

Good luck. :)

Re: 40 hp Merc engine dies as throttle is put on

Thanks for the reply JB - the throttle does actually move at the motor end - but for some reason it doesn't seem to have any effect on the carby. The problem seems to be between the connection at the motor to the carby itself. I can see 2 levers - one seems to move when you use the warm-up lever, the cable moves on the throttle one but nothing moves at the carby itself? How is it connected to it? Do the two work together somehow?
My friend and I are pulling the powerhead off at the end of the week, as we discovered the bolts on the exhaust side of the side cover are just ornaments! Approx 5 of them are just sitting in there (stuck in with some silicone  ) so to fix that we are going to have to drill out the remaining threads and retap.
I have only just bought the boat about 2 weeks ago - I suspected the motor would have some problems as the previous owner was very vague about it!
The motor does run - but very roughly & seems to die when it has warmed up. Any clues as to what this could mean? We have put in new plugs and leads and the fuel is ok.

any clues would be useful

thanks
