Hi, I just purchased a used pontoon w/ a 1994 40 mariner 4 cyl. The boat can be very tough to start either cold or warm. Any suggestions out there? Choke or no Choke? Throttle or no? Thanks

Scoot, Be sure there is good spark.New plugs.
Be sure the choke is closing and opening right.
Be sure you follow the proper starting procedure.
When cold Squeeze the primer bulb till hard set the throttle to the correct starting position.
If there is a fast idle setting use it
push the choke and turn the key.
When warm set the throttle and it should start right up.If the motor has set around a lot you may need to tune up the fuel system.

i had the same problem till i started using the 8 count procedure.ie prime bulb turn key to on but not to engage starter push in on choke on ignition button for 8 count, pull up fast idle fully, then turn key fully, this works great for me on same engine as yours, hope it works for you too.

Re: 40 HP Mariner magnum start probs

I have a Mariner 40 hp Magnum. I am not a boat motor mechanic and need help to identify a part. The motor will not start. I only hear a clicking noise when I engage the ignition. The part is about one inch in cylindrical shape on top. The bottom of the part is black plastic and is bolted to the engine block on the opposite side of the motor from the starter. The part in question also appears to have a black button. If I push the buton the part does not click when a helper engages the ignition

Best to start your own thread, sounds like your problem is the solenoid
