Re: 40 HP Johnson Oil Injection
Walley.... I agree wholeheartedly with Alcan's reply. If the warning horn on your system beeps when you turn the key on, the warning system is operation, and it is best that you leave the VRO unit in operation.

FYI... The VRO system came into being in 1984 and at that time, there was no warning system.

A short time later, a three (3) wire warning system was incorporated into the VRO pump but a two (2) wire warning horn (Hot12v, sensor) was used. If the warning system and the horn was operational, the two wire horn would sound off if a problem (on your engine - oil, overheating) was encountered. But it would not beep when you turned the key on. Also, this three (3) wire warning system could at times cause a false warning (However a false warning is considerably better than no warning... forces one to check the engine etc).

This warning type VRO was upgraded many times to correct minor problems, improve the ratio settings at various rpms etc, but it still retained the three (3) wire warning system.

Later, in 1991 according to my books (but not my memory, seems to me this took place earlier), OMC finally upgraded the VRO warning system to a four (4) wire system to eliminate the false warning problem. This incorporated a new type three (3) wire horn (Hot12v, Sensor, Ground).

Bottom line: There have been no further problems with the VRO if the warning system is maintained and operational. You may want to look at the wiring that leads out the back of the VRO to see if it is a three (3) or four (4) wire system, but regardless of which it may be, as Alcan has said in not so many words, if it's working, sell it as is with a clear conscience.
