Hi, I recently bought this 40 hp mariner 2 stroke motor. When in the water and I put it in reverse I get this growling noise. Also not much thrust, which probably is normal. It goes in gear ok and works, but my concern is the noise, which I don't get when I'm going forward. Only in reverse. Is this normal or do I have some gear damage? Thanks in advance.

check your cable adjustment, you may not have a full travel on the cable causing the gear grind as it attempts to engage

It seems to go in gear ok and will slowly back the boat, but makes the growling noise as its backing up. The more throttle I give it the louder the growl.
