I need help. My 40 hp evinrude 1986 is acting like it is running on 1 cylinder. Compression is 135 on 1 and 120 on the other. I have rebuilt both carbs and fuel pump. Replaced both spark plugs, wires and coils no change.Any advise.

Thanks

have you check spark? compression is ok, did you follow the directions in the TOP SECRET FILE on cleaning carbs, did you remove the jets? with the motor running, pull a plug wire, you should notice a drop in rpms. if no change that cylinder is not running, then do the other plug.

The spark is good. Yes read the top secret file and followed the directios on cleaning/ rebuild. Pulled the plug wires notice a drop in rpms on both when it warmd up then one cylinder was not working and this would alternate between cylinders.

Re: 40 hp evinrude

so you got a change when you pulled the plugs, that means it is running on both cylinders. now if it one failed after them motor warmed up, you may have a coil heating up and failing.

your response was kind of hard to decipher. explain a little better.
