First post here. I just bought a 16' 1961 Merrill with a Evinrude motor. The motor Mod # is 3551 and the serial # is 01652. Can anyone tell me what year it is? Also I would like to get a Evenrude owners manual.

I would also like any information on the Merrill boat Co. I do know they made boats in Portland Oregon fron 1959 to 1962, this is all I know.

I'm really a Hotrodder and I don't know anything about boats although I was in the Navy in the late 60's. :)

Welcome to Iboats, Merril!

Can you check that model number again? I think you have an Evinrude 35531 which would be a '62 model or a 35521 which is a 1960. Either way, the model number should have five digits.

The owners manual and factory service manual are still being reproduced. You can get it from one of these sources (they all ultimately come from Ken Cook, who has the license to copy):
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook

We'll be able to give you a little more info with the correct model number.

Woops, 35531, 1962. Thanks. Can't wait for it to warm up so I can try this thing out! One more question, where is the water intake on this motor? A friend gave me a device that supplies water thru a garden hose so you can run the motor on land for an ops check. Looks like it won't work on an Evinrude.

You're absolutely right. The older OMC engines don't work with the 'earmuff' style flushers. Unfortunately, it seems the last company that made flushers for forties has discontinued them, but if you can find a Tempo 917TFA it will fit. Of course, you can use a bucket as long as you get the waterline up above the seam in the lower unit.

Just behind the prop a 'fin' hangs down from the cavitation (or anti-ventilation) plate above it. The hole in the back of the fin is where exhaust comes out, and the screened area on the front of it is where the water goes in. It goes behind the long thin cover with holes in it right above the cavitation plate, then up to the water pump on the top of the lower unit. The proper flusher fits onto the fin.
Hot cooling water exits through the large hole on the back of the mid-section once the engine warms up a bit. Before that, only a little water will come out that hole.

Hope that explains it!

Evinrude Model 35531
Year: 1962
HP: 40
WOT RPMS: 4500 (4000-5000rpm range)
Displacement: 43.9 CID
Cylinders: 2
Weight: 131 - 155 lbs
Gear Ratio: 12:21
Lower unit oil: If manual shift, OMC/BRP 'HiVis' or equivalent 80/90W outboard gearcase oil.
