I have a 1963 40 hp with electric choke.
I cannot get the motor to start. If I spray starting fluid into the carb it will start and run 1 or 2 seconds and die. when I pulled the spark plugs the top plug was dry and clean it looked like it just come out of the box. The lower plug was dry but a little brown. The top cilender dont seem to be getting any gas. Several times I had gas running out of the throte of the carb when I was trying to start the motor. What should I try next

Howdy Biker. I don't think you are getting fuel to either cylinder.

Start at your fuel tank. Does it have water in it? Is the pickup tube clogged up? Has the pickup tube broken off and fallen to the bottom of the tank?

Does your fuel line have air leaks? Is your primer bulb getting hard when you pump it up before trying to start?

Pull the fuel line input from the carb. Turn it over. Does fuel spurt into a plastic bottle? If not, overhaul your fuel pump.

Spray WD-40 (NEVER starting fluid, which has no lubricant in it) into the carb to keep it running long enough to check by pulling plugs whether both cylinders are firing.

Let us know what you have found by then. If you still have a problem we will start from there.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

I got the motor started but when I went to open the choke it would cut out before I could spray any wd40 into it. I checked my plugs for spark. My top plug has no spark The lower plug is firing. What is the next step.

I would go to a local OMC ( sorry Bombardier) dealer and pick up a carb kit and an ignition tune up kit. Install these parts correctly and the motor will purr like a kitten. Oh yeah, put in a couple new plugs also.

i'm having similar issues with mine. both of my plugs arent firing and i know for a fact that they're good plugs.. i hooked them into the wires on my truck to see if they fired. my cylanders are also not getting any fuel into them.. i know the carb is good and i know my pump is good. i get gas leaking around my electric choke when i choke it too much while im trying to start. if you find a good solid fix for it PLEASE let me know what it was.

You should start your own thread it gets very confusing for everyone
trying to keep things straight.
If you follow the advise given here you should solve your problems.
If coils appear near new no staining or cracks they are probably ok.
There are of course many reasons for no spark we are suggesting the most common failures.
