Model # RDS-22 CC
Serial # 207118

Just bought motor and can only get it to pop a few times. Checked spark and it is weak. Removed flywheel and both coils are cracked. Tried repairing with JB Weld applying even coat over top and sides of coils, (understood this is not a good idea). Anyhow from reading other posts it seems that the coils are likley suspects. If I get replacement coils do I have to reset the timing?

Any idea of the year and make of this?

Thanks!

no you do not have to reset the time if you replace the coils

Re: 40 HP Evenrude with Weak Spark

It's a 1960. Oddly, most early 1960 engines had a serious problem with their crankshafts which were replaced, usually after breaking. If you've got the nut that takes a 3/4" wrench the flywheel torque is 65 ft/lbs (I usually go strong of this spec). If it is the nut that takes a 1-1/16 wrench then 105 ft/lbs.

I find that when you unscrew the terminal on the point it gets bent a bit and needs to be reset. But it's so easy I don't know why you wouldn't at least verify them while the flywheel is off.

The aftermarket coil Iboats, etc, sell (18-5181) I think is better than the OEM ones, which are both far superior to the originals you have.
