A friend of mine has a 94 (i think), Mercury 4 cylinder 40 hp engine on the back of of his aluminum Tracker boat. The motor only has manual tilt. Is there any way to convert it so that it has power tilt?

if he has the single ram manual assist then it can be converted to power trim. I convert them all the time and the cost is about $300 including the pump, motor, manifold, wiring, and relays. Basically, you take the pump off a 25HP force and bolt it onto the existing ram. There's some minor internal issues with spool valve and you have to install a wiring harness. But it's a fairly straightforward project.

I believe it is the single ram assist. Next time I talk to him I will ask.

So the existing ram can remain in place, it just gets a pump to move it? That sounds easier than putting in a completely different assembly. I think his boat is prewired for power trim and tilt, but the option was not purchased by the original owner.

yes. existing ram is used which avoids compatibility issues with mounting brackets. However, ram has to be taken off boat to install the power pump. When finished it is the same thing as the mercury single ram trim used on 1987-1996 30-60HP engines except that it does not have the same bypass spool. Same system was used on various assorted other engines through 2009 but there are some compatibility issues. buying used might be cheaper up front i\f you get a good deal on trim ... but problem is that used one selling that cheap may not be in good shape. I buy used system all the time to use a cores. About one in three is garbage. About one in six is in good enough shape to just install and use for another decade. I guess my point is - check craigslist first. You might get lucky and a little old lady who only boats on the fifth sunday of every month will be parting out her 2005 mercury.

Awesome, thanks a bunch for the info.

Is it possible to find the parts new? And do you have part numbers?

some of the parts are not sold separately. You either have to bhuy a whole new system, make them yourself with a metal lathe, or cannibalize. If it was easy then everybody would do it.
