i have 4 wires that are supposed to wire up to something either in my center console like the kill switch or cord pull kill switch or ignition button or the battery, im not sure what they are or where they are supposed to connect please help me
in the pictures i point to where 3 of the wires are connected at, 2 go into that little black box that is bolted on by the starter, 1 is in a black box on the backside of the motor by the spark plugs and one wire goes into a connection of wires that goes to a black box on the other side, is that box my powerpack? im not sure what everything is on these outboards sorry all help would be appreciated 1.jpg2.jpg3.jpg

Re: 4 wires coming from johnson outboard help

If you had mentioned the colors of the cables in question, it might have been easier?

The tan line and yellow w/ red lines wires goto nuts on the black box behind the starter, the other two lines are black, but possibly could have been changed because they run unorganized looking around the backside of the engine to the box by the spark plugs and to the CD box

Well the second pic looks like your pointing to your kill switch wire. But the pics are so small that I cannot tell what you are pointing at in the other two photos?

The black box behind your starter is your solenoid by the way :)

I can't tell much from the small pictures, but I assume you are talking about the starter solenoid, power pack, and terminal strip.

Continuing to assume, I think you are talking about two wires from the starter solenoid for a push button for start. Pushing the button would electrically connect them together and the starter would run. That's the easy part.

The other two are questionable, since they are makeshift, according to you. Probably kill wires for a stop button. Without knowing exactly how they are connected, it is hard to tell if they are correct or not. Connecting the power pack to the wrong thing can blow it.

Re: 4 wires coming from johnson outboard help

Yes they worked, ok, the top picture didnt barly get my finger in it but im holding that black wire that connects to the "connection" lower down that goes into the CD BOX,
2nd picture shows the other black wire in the black box back by the spark plugs
The third picture has the tan wire going to a nut in the black boot on the solenoid and a yellow and red line wire (not in the picture its behind my finger) going to that front nut on the left of the picture
So do the tan and yellow wire goto the ignition button like 1 on each prong of it? If that is the solenoid...

Re: 4 wires coming from johnson outboard help

Ok so if then those two are grounds, would each one go seperatly to a different kill switch or together on the same one? Like one to the lanyard kill and one to the switch kill? Or would it matter? The guy i bought this skiff from had some crazy ugly wiring setup, it was filled with useless wires, and splices everywhere and wires twisted onto each other, im trying to clean it up and i grabbed these and immediatly forgot where they went haha and im supposed to take it on its maiden this weekend, hopefully

Re: 4 wires coming from johnson outboard help

Let's begin with the proper names of those black boxes. Top picture shows the two ignition spark coils on the right and the power pack on the left. Next picture down shows you pointing to a mounting stud on one of the spark coils. Yes, that is a ground. Third picture shows the starter solenoid.

Going back to what I said in the first place, using wires from the positive battery cable nut on the solenoid, to a push button, then a second wire from the push button back to the small terminal on the starteer solenoid will crank the motor when you push the button. That part is so elementary simple that it doesn't deserve any more comment.

That leaves the two remaining wires. One obviously is grounded to the mounting stud on the spark coil. So, run that one to one side of a second push button. Connect the other side of the push button to the kill wire on the power pack. I can't tell which one that is by the pictures, but certainly the person that put those wires in there must have known. Lets give him credit and say he is correct. If so, pushing that button will stop the motor.

This ain't no space ship, it isn't all that complicated.

Sorry its the GRAY (tach) wire that I need to know about. Does it connect to. The power pak, rectifier, stator or coil pak. Help appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Re: 4 wires coming from johnson outboard help

Gray tach wire goes to the rectifier. Typically along with a yellow/gray stripe wire that it connects to. It counts the AC pulses going to the rectifier, before they are converted to DC.
