I am considering purchase of either a 2003 model boat equipped with a 115 hp. Johnson 2-stroke or the same hull except a 2004 model with a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke. Price difference is $4500. I realize some of the advantages of the 4 cycle, but the bucks make the 2 cycle very attractive. Would anyone care to guess what the difference in fuel consumption might be? These are 19 ft. boats.
Any other thoughts? This boat will only get used about six months per year.

You can buy a lot of fuel for $4,500.00

The 4S will probably get somewhere around 20-30% better fuel economy-overall. Even more, if you idle a lot.

The 4S will be easier to live with: quieter, starts easier, etc.

As for durability, the jury's still out on that one.

Re: 4 stroke v. 2 stroke

They're either giving the Johnson away or charging an arm and leg for the Yamaha. My guess is they want to get rid of the Johnson.

My last Yamaha F115 cost $7500 with prop and controls. That would put the Johnson 115 at $3000.

So it really depends on your use. But IMO, the F115 is a superior outboard, and that particular model is probably one of the best outboards made today. My F115's get at least 30-40% better fuel useage than my 2-stroke 115's. And I always get more useful life, better durability and reliability, and a better resale out of my 4-strokes. Plus they are just more of a pleasure to own. This is in a commercial environment. So do you wan't the VW, or the Lexus? :)

Got to agree with forktail, 4500 difference is an awful lot! I have had 2 strokes and now have a 4 stroke. I wouldn't change back to a 2 stroke.

Hi
Some info about fuel consumtion etc on my boat with Yamaha F115 (I have a 2003 model).
From a boat magazine where they tested the boat I have. You have to convert to gallons if You need, to understand the fuel consumtion better perhaps. I live in Sweden where we use only metric, liters.
Note the speed is in knots, "nautical miles" per hour (not "miles" per hour)

Yamaha F115
Diameter prop in test 19" (Yamaha orginal black, steel)
Max RPM in test 5.900
Boat Yamarin 5820, 19'(5.7 meter) DC/Bowrider

Speed in knots:
max rpm 39,0
minus 500 rpm 35,6
minus 1.000 rmp 32,0
minus 1.500 rpm 27,4

Liter/hour
max rpm 38,6
minus 500 rpm 28,8
minus 1.000 rpm 23,8
minus 1.500 rpm 18,5

Liter/nautical mile
max rpm 0,99
minus 500 rpm 0,81
minus 1.000 rpm 0,74
minus 1.500 rpm 0,68

Decibel (at drivers place)
max rpm 84
minus 500 rpm 83
minus 1.000 rpm 81
minus 1.500 rpm 80

I do not think You will regret to buy a Yamaha F115 but if economy do not permit that You will probably be happy with the 2-stroke also.
