4 stroke outboard motor oil??

are they worth it??

they are much more expensive that the regular automotive oil.

can i use auto oil instead?

Depends on what the manufacture "recommends". I use regular car oil in my Suzuki built Johnson 70hp but they only require SH or better grade oil with no requirements for "marine" in the oil.

I'm new to boating but quickly realize the expense of this pleasure. Motors are very expensive. Price difference between automotive and manufacturer's oil is not really significant, especially if your boating use only dictates one change per year for 4 cycle motor. Plus I kind of feel I support the manufacturer of my motor - Mercury, maybe sappy but I'd like them to stay in business.

I agree though make sure you follow the motor's manufacturers recommendations, but don't frett the small stuff like 3 quarts of oil per year. Frett something big like having to take your motor to the marine mechanic. $$$$$$
