4 stroke Merc or 4 stroke Yamaha

I'm looking for a new center console and can't decide between 4 stroke 90hp mercury or a 4 stroke 90hp yamaha.Any advice?

I believe they're the same engine(built by Yamaha)but with different lower units.

The powerhead including the ignition and carbs on the Merc are built by Yamaha, Everything else is Mercury (mid section, power trim unit, lower unit etc.). Warranty and service for the entire unit are provided by Mercury.

Thanks for the info guys, I had no idea Mercury delt with Yamaha,I'm sure it will be news to alot of people I have talked with. I have heard more complaints about <br />Mercury and virtualy none about Yamaha.<br /><br />Doesn't Yamaha have a longer factory warranty?

Yamaha and Mercury developed the midrange 4-strokes together. The powerhead is the same, the gear box is different. I also believe that Mercury uses a different cowling/exhaust routing that has enabled them to receive the 3-star vs the 2-star rating. THe warranty for Mercury is 3 years for the engine and 3 years for corrosion. Yamahas are great engines, they don't seem to break. I've owned two. Mercs cost less money. I just bought a Merc and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. In general, I think most outboards have gotten pretty good, with exception to quality issues associated with Evinrude and Johnson. Bombardier is cleaning house and I think they will return to be reliable engines once again.

Forest,<br /><br />Merc's standard warranty on 4 strokes is 3 years, currently (and every spring) they are running thier yearly spring special giving 2 more years totaling five years.<br /><br />I'm not sure but I don't think any MFG offers more than 5 years. I just purchased a 115 EFI 4 stroke and got the 5 year warranty.<br /><br />While I was at the dealership I made the mistake of calling it a yamy-merc and they were quick to correct me. They told me just what mrmerc said. There is more merc than yammi there and not all the fours are from the joint venture.<br /><br />Something a lot of people don't know is that on several yamaha motors there are a lot of mercury parts. I was told that both companies joined on these motors to get a jump on Johnson-Evenrude and they did get a few year jump.<br /><br />In the 2004 model year there will be all Mercury large displacement 4 strokes (175, 200, 225) or as all merc as possible. They will not use the Yamaha power plant.<br /><br />

They both will do you just fine. Deal with the dealer you're most comfortable with. Best price isn't always-best deal!

Capt U,<br /><br />Do you have some inside info on which way Merc or any other manufacturer is going to go in the 150-200 HP range. The four stroke 6's are heavy, perhaps a souped-up 4 cylinder like the Suzuki 140.

RJS,<br /><br />There are already four stroke 225's on the market. The foreign manufactures have done it, one would think Mercury wouldn’t be far behind?<br /><br />The only "inside" info I get if you can call it that is from my dealer. I've spent a lot of money with him over the years and he has done me a lot of favors. We have a good relationship and he hasn't steered me wrong yet.<br /><br />Recently when I was there finalizing my purchase of a new boat I asked him: "With the Japanese making large displacement four stroke motors I guess Mercury will be left behind?" He than told me that large displacement Mercury's were on line to be released in the 2004 model year. He said two or three models in the 200 HP range.<br /><br />I suppose anything could happen between now and than but that's what the factory is telling him and that's what he is telling his customers. Maybe he is telling his customers the “best case” to hold them off from buying a Honda or Suzuki 225 HP 4 stroke until Mercs are out?<br /><br />I guess any information you get from a dealer, even one you trust is subject to the truth happening. And of course he is relying on a factory sales rep telling him the truth. So I guess we will see what happens.<br /><br />

You might look at Suzuki - their have some kind of 6 year warantee but I'm not sure if it is an extra cost item or included.

Recently bought a '02 90 hp Merc 4-stroke to take the place of my '99 80 hp Yamaha 4-stroke that went down with my boat in a storm last Labor Day. Dealer sold only Merc Engines, when he pulled cowling off--it was carbon copy of my Yamaha,powerhead is Yamaha on 75-90 hp merc 4-strokes. My 80 hp Yamaha was a great engine, so I bought the Merc.. I don't think Yamaha makes a 90 hp 4-stoke. It would be an 80 or 100 hp. Good luck

Mercury will have thier own high horsepower 4-strokes coming up, They are hoping before 2004. They'll be inline six's. Yes the tower of power. can't wait
