4 Stroke Longevity

Compared to a well maintained American Engine, what would the equivalent hours on a 4 stroke be compared to 50,000, 100,000, and 150,000 miles?

Trying to figure out if 500 hours on a 4 stroke is extremely high.

Thanks,
James

Re: 4 Stroke Longevity

It all depends on WHO owned the motor  if it was mine it would be NO problem

But a LOT of people do not do the correct matiance and if they can not show records you can figure it was not done

In real word driveing why Silverado hour meter hit over 1500 hrs at 51000 miles so it will go over 6000 hrs as i have no problem going 200,000 miles

an engine with 100 hours can be a lot worse than one with 500 hours, depends on the maint. and type of use.

I know a Pro fisherman that has a pair of 115 yamaha 4 strokes with over 4,500 hours on them in a few years, and they still go like a dream, BUT, lots of other stuff is not so good, the steering swivel bracket has heaps of wear, the trim is dodgey, the gear shift is sloppy, the gear box leaks a bit, but the engines run fine, so I guess all the "bits and pieces" need to be taken into the equation as well.

I sold (to repower to a BF90) my very well maintained '02 Honda BF50 that had 500 hours.
The guys that bought it couldn't get the money out of their pocket fast enough to pay $700 over high book.

The motor wasn't anywhere near being worn, it started/ran no differently then when it was new.

500 hours isn't a lot of hours.

Hey Skinny,

Smart man. Down the road that $700 could multiply in worth to him many times by the reliability of a well cared for engine.

Besides, I like a pretty engine, nice and shiny and all.

Yep, I'm on my second "nice and shiny" now, with power to spare I'll find out firsthand the longevity of a 4stroke.
