Having owned a number of 2 stroke outboards, I have never bought the extended warranties--though I know there are two sides to the issue, and on any given day either one can be right.

I just ordered a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke. My question, to those of you who are tuned in, is this: does the fact this is a 4 stroke, less proven over a shorter time...make it more advisable to buy the extended warranty, than if I were buying the same Yamaha in a 2 stroke? Or, does the fact that it's 4 stroke make the powerhead less likely to be a problem? thx for your input (fyi--3 yrs comes with the engine, 2 add'l cost approximately $500)

Re: 4 Stroke Extended Warranty

BD,

I'll take the high road on this one. An extended warranty is an insurance policy, or a gamble on the part of the provider that he will not have to pay. Statistically, he's right.

Here are some questions that you should ask yourself:
1. Who am I buying this from?
2. Do I trust them?
3. Can I afford it?

Mechanics - a four stroke engine has more moving parts, runs cooler, is more efficient, produces less power, is heavier, is quieter, costs more, meets most states 2006 EPA requirements, and has been around for about 100 years, and is more complex.

So what do you think? See, thats really whats important. I could give you lots of advice and opinions, but what if I'm wrong? If you want to know what I would do, I'd make up a cost benefit analysis and go from there. If you and I are talk'in over the fence, can you afford the extended warranty? If so, it's probably worth the peace of mind, IMHO.

Best of luck

Case

IMHO $500 is a small price to pay for a piece of mind.Keep in mind any dealer can sell you an extended warranty and look for a company called Pinacle. They have a %100 REFUNDABLE warranty if no claim is made.I purchased this myself and know of a friend who didnt use his and his money was really refunded back to him.I guess its like they borrow your money interest free. Also keep in mind most of the time you have 30 days before initial manuf. warr expires to purchase an extended warr.Your dealer may or may not tell you this.
