4 horse Model 40 wont run off of gas tank

I just started working on a 1972 model 40 four horse that I got when my father-in-law cashed out. I can start it when I shot gas directly into the carb, but not when I hook up the gas tanks. I have tried several gas tanks, so I know it's not in the tank or the the fitting, but it wont even fire on the gas tank. I have even shot starting fluid in the hose and it wont fire. The only thing between the gas fitting and the carb it the fuel pump, right?

Go to the Engine FAQs, Haywood. Do the rest of the "Outboard won't start" troubleshooting.

Probably gummed up carb.
