4.5hp Mercury

I recently received a 1977 4.5hp mercury motor from a co-worker. The price was right (free). I have not heard it run but it turns over with the rope and feels like it has good compression. I think it has been setting for a while because the small rubber hose that connects to the water port was dry rotted and split open on both ends. My biggest concern about this unit is when you but it in forward gear and turn the prop it has a ratcheting sound in the lower unit. In reverse it fully engages and you can turn the engine over with the prop. I have looked around a little for parts but the seem to be hard to find. Do any of you have experience with this engine? Where can i find parts for it?
