4.5hp Merc Lower Unit Help/Question

Greetings,<br /><br /> Thanks to a fine gentleman on the board I discovered that my Merc 4.5hp is from the 1980/81 time frame.<br /> The lower unit has one hole in it that appears to be where you can add lower unit oil, BUT there is no other plug like on other lower units I've seen.<br /> Does anyone know how I can drain and add new Lower unit lube to this 20 year old motor?<br /> Thanks guys in advance for the help.<br /><br />John

John the other screw that you are looking for should be above the cavitation plate on your motor. if that is the one you found there is another one on the bullet part of the unit. Be shure to fill this from the bottom up so you can alliminate air bubbles.<br /><br />GOOD LUCK!<br /> Nick

Nickster,<br /><br /> Doh !! Don't I feel like a fool. You are correct my friend, there was another hole on the front bulb part of the Lower Unit. The oil is real real old and obviously milkish. I will change it and run it awhile to see if there is a shaft seal leak.<br /> Can you help me with the impeller for this motor? It pumps tons of water, amazingly since it sat for years without use. I would have thought that the impeller would be toast but it pisses like a *******. I may wish to change it anyway though. <br /> Do you know how I can access it and change it ? There seems to be one main nut on the lower unit that can drop the lower leg, but perhaps there are other things that need to be detached?<br /><br /> Any help would be great. Oh..and THANKS a million for the oil screw questions.<br /><br />John
