4.5hp merc lower uint

Hi, I have a friend who just bought an 8' tender with a 1981 Merc 4.5 hp and we started it in a barrel of water and are just getting dribbles of water out of the pee tube. We thought we would check the impeller and tried to drop the lower unit. We removed the 2 nuts and tried to pry it apart but it won't pull apart. Is there a secret to pulling the lower unit off, like a linkage connection or is the linkage supposed to slide out easily. We've trided prying with screwdrivers and wood shimms but to no avail. Th e centre of the lower unit seems to be the stuck part. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated and thankyou in advance.

Bcbob,I dont have a clue about your motor.<br />You should have a ser. manual before starting any <br />repair.You can get them at NAPA,the tab at the top of the page,Amazon.com,ebay,etc.<br />The library has manuals for reference.<br /> If you had a manual you would probably be on the water now.<br />If it has a shift there is linkage that needs to be unhooked,there is also a water tube that could be stuck or needs special treatment.<br /> Good luck.
