cheers again all.....so I got this little johnson 4.5 from father-in-law for my stern drive canoe-fishing-setup. have used it a few times and works great - once its running. went to take the actual father-in-law fishing and of coarse couldn't get it started (lol).... so back at home in garage, I'm finding I'm not getting any fuel to carb. it has option for internal or external tank, and when I switch valve from 'off' to 'internal', I got fuel flowing to the 'fuel pump' (gravity fed as internal tank is full). but I can pull and pull and never get fuel to the float bowl (carb is off, and fuel line from pump to carb is low in engine housing, well below pump and fuel level in internal tank). I pulled the pump off and apart, no damage to any parts or diaphram, put back together but still no fuel pumping. I guess my question is what makes this pump work? engine vacuum? how do I now decide if I have vacuum or pump problem?
