4.5 Evinrude lower unit

Similar problem to surfrider123's with the 6hp. I need to confirm that the lower unit on my 1981 4.5 Evinrude is not being held in place by anything other than the three bolts. I get 1/2 inch of drop, but then no more. Schematics don't show any other attachment points. Am I missing something?? Any tricks that I need to know??

It was not uncommon for the driveshafts on those to stick in the crankshaft. The travel you're getting is probably the distance the shaft moves upwards in the lower unit before the waterpump key hits the pump housing. I suspect if you use a bit of extra force, the lower unit will come off with the shaft stuck in the powerhead. At that point, I have used vice grips clamped in a non-bearing area to pull the driveshaft free. Then HOPE the crankshaft is still usable as often the splines are shot at this point due to rust...
