Where is it? I have a 1991 4.3L with Alpha One Gen I. I am tired of looking for it and my mercruiser manual doesn't show. Help...need to change the oil.

Re: 4.3L Oil Filter

Well, if nobody has installed a remote oil filter on it, it should be located on the port side of the engine back near the flywheel.
If a remote oil filter was installed, then there are hoses coming from where the oil filter should be......just follow them.

FOUND IT! Thanks. Since this is a GM and everything else on the boat appears to have been replaced with automotive parts, I was looking for a little larger, blue, orange or white filter. Now.....I gotta figure out how to get to it to get it out.......

Re: 4.3L Oil Filter

i tried to "automotive" swop my oil filter on my 3 litre engine.. cross referencing numbers failed and i ended up visually looking at a whole bunch of em.. found one that looked okay fitted the bloody thing fired up the engine and ten seconds later it blew off..

the threads must have been a few thou smaller and i ended up with a mess in the bilge area he he.. still could have been worse it could have stayed on a little longer blew off with the engine under load and wrecked it..

not saying automotive swopping with oil filters is a bad idea just make sure u get the right one.. he he

trog100

Checkster

Getting to it and getting it off is a great idea.

Now can you get to it and get a new one on ?

Upset a customer with an Invader a couple years ago.But I just could touch the filter, and wasn't sure I could get a new one on.We sold him a remote kit,and it took hours to install.Even after exhaust manifold removal.

DHP
as to aftermarket (other than OEM filters) do you save that much?

I can get to it (after removing the batteries) but none of my wrenches fit the filter and I cant get enough leverage to loosen it......looks like its stayn right there for a while.

Hey trog100, the guy at the boat shop gave me a crossref auto filter too. I told him I prefered the marine filter. He said, "Suit yourself." like I was being picky......I was and it is only a couple of bucks more.
