I changed the fuel water separator in my boat last night. All Academy had was a Moeller, 10 micron "universal" filter to replace the original mercury one. Before putting the new one on, I filled it probably within 1/2 inch of the top with fresh fuel. Today, we started the motor on muffs. It ran Ok but I noticed that it would bog down a couple of thousand RPM's periodically. I didn't think much of it but when we took it to the lake this evening it did the same thing. It would run really nice then bog down a bit, RPM's would drop a bit then, 3-4 seconds later it would run fine again. I am selling the boat and the new owners were going to meet us for a test ride. I WAS TERRIFIED. We continued to run the boat around the lake for probably 20-30 minutes. Gradually the problem disappeared. Was it just the new filter getting "broken in"? I'm not one to sell "crap" to anyone. So, looking for advice before they come pick the boat up early next week. The boat ran fine the entire time they were in it and were driving it. I don't want them to get it home and have it not run well. Thanks

What part number did you install?

Seems some of these universal fuel filters from Moeller aren't designed to be used on engines with electric fuel pumps. Some electric fuel pumps flow in the 5 - 8 PSI range but yours is more in the 38 - 43 PSI range which could be showing signs of fuel restrictions. Personally I'd go buy a Mercruiser OEM fuel filter part number 35-802893Q01 Quicksilver Brand or 35-802893T Mercury Brand and go rerun the boat to ensure all is good before selling the boat. Sierra Marine 18-7844 Fuel Filter - Short 3.875" (21 MICRON) would work as well or 18-7944 Filter-Short 3.875"- 10 Micron too. http://www.iboats.com/Fuel-Water-Fil...tions__Answers

  • Designed for Mercury, BRP (Johnson & Evinrude), Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Tohatsu and Nissan outboard motors/engines. Universal application as well.
  • Includes Powder coated filter head, filter, barbs and plugs.
  • Filter head is reusable.
  • Not recommended for use with electric fuel pumps.

UPDATE! I ran to Walmart this morning and they had the Quicksilver 35-802893Q01 . I came home, replaced it then ran it on muffs for quite a while. No hesitations at all! Thank goodness as they are coming to pick up the boat likely tomorrow! Thanks Fun Times
