4.3L Mercruiser will not go into gear.

I just bought a 1990 Sea Ray 18' Ski Boat. I was running down the river and lost all power. Once I cranked the motor back I did not have any forward or reverse gears. It was like it was in the neutral position. I cheeked the prop and it was still tight. With the motor off I could put the shifter in the forward position and only turn the prop one way. I would appreciate any suggestions.<br /><br />Thanks

Check the gear wire to see it is attached and lubricated. If it is you may have to remove the lower drive unit and check the gear pin. <br />Not so difficult.<br /><br />What is the drive unit? Alpha???

It is an Alpha I<br /><br />I still have movement at the switch plate.

When you say you lost power, do you mean the engine shut off or the boat quit moving ?
