4.3L Mercruiser temperature fluctuation

2001 4.3l Mercruiser carbed engine...winterized last year and decided to replace the t-stat...no problem,just had the housing off so put in a new t-stat...put it in the water this year and the temp fluctuates constantly between 125 and 170...dosnt get hot but never stabelizes...thanks for any help

That's an awfully wide fluctuation.....
I would suspect a faulty stat......​

Yes,thats what I thought too...local dealer where I got the t-stat tried to sell me an impeller...when I emphasized the fact that the engine wasnt getting hot he just gave me a dumb look and said it wasnt the t-stat...talked to another mechanic and he told me lots of people just throe the t-stat away and run without one...not sure about that...
