I bought a 2001 Crownline 180 BR that had been sitting for 3 years. Its not my first boat but it is my first I/O. I am a car guy though, so I figured it wouldn't be much different. At any rate. It did not start when I purchased it, but there was plenty of compression in each cylinder so I figured it was a safe enough purchase and I'd figure out the fuel/spark/air junk when I had a chance.
I am pretty sure at this point, in my efforts to get this thing running...I am simply creating additional issues. Even if they are only mental stability issues of my own...they are still issues. I am nearing the mood of drinking too much and breaking stuff on purpose which I will ultimately regret later! You know what that's like right?...no?...me either...
The motor cranked like crazy, but did not fire.
So I figured I would get the easy ignition components swapped out before I even tried to start it. I put on a new coil, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor...pulled out the injectors and cleaned them out. tested them to make sure they actuate, put them back in and put all new gaskets/o-rings in the injector pod. At this point I feel confident enough that I will at least get a spark. Nope...not only do I not get a spark in the #1 plug...I don't even get one from the brand new coil to the cap.
Clean fuel injectors...should get some fuel to spray, right? Nope. Don't even get pulse when I plug in the noid light I used to test it. So at this point...im actually encouraged. Im thinking this is a good thing, cause as it seemed to be electrical, its probably the same culprit causing both issues. Woohoo! Find the source...resolve it...two birds one stone. Onllllllyyyy....instead of finding the problem, I contorted my body into positions it hasn't been in for about 20 years, stuffed myself into cracks and crevices that I just don't belong in...and I'm pretty sure I was sexually assaulted by a motor mount stud.
Why would I do that, you ask? Chasing electricity, of course! Only to no avail. I started at the battery...good. Starter...good. Slave solenoid...good. Both sides of the 50amp breaker...good. Coil...good...coil also checked out good in the ohms category. I'll check the ICM...makes sense, right? Wait...where is it? No really...WHERE IS IT??? Not mounted to the distributor where you'd think it would be..."oh...that's ok" I think to myself...I've seen some mounted to blocks and manifolds before..."maybe this is one of those styles" I think.
2 hours later...not only is this boat not running yet...but I still haven't found the ICM to test it AND I have 3 wound closure strips on my face! Yes...my face! its totally gonna scar. "Good think I am not in sales"...I think to myself...being the eternal optimist.
I come inside...calm down for a few...kick myself for quitting smoking 11 years ago and regroup. Let me check the internet...it knows everything. Tons of wiring diagrams...TONS of them. "oh hey look...there it is right there on this paper!!"" Wootwoot!! I can find it now!!! Wait no, I cant actually, because wiring diagrams don't actually tell you where the thing is mounted...just that it exists...somewhere...in the cosmos...
I give up and skip it...I will move on to the remote ignition fuses mounted next to the relays and the ECM. I got this. No problem. This may be the first time I was super pissed to NOT find a blown fuse.
Hmmm. Now...I just don't know. "Hey wait...why is there a random ground wire laying next to the distributor?...maybe I knocked it off something when I was putting new parts on?..it looks like its natural curve would suggest it was previously mounted right here. I'll just put that right back on."...yeah...right on the negative terminal of the slave solenoid!!!....what a brainless move that was. I don't even know what that ground goes to!!! But the second I turn the key...LIGHTS out. whole darn boat is dead!!!
Battery has juice...but nothing turns on anymore with the key or the lanyard switch.
So my questions...
What the heck did I blow up by putting that ground in the wrong spot?
Where does that ground ACTUALLY GO??
Why is my ignition system completely cut off from power (even before the rest of the boat was too)?
WHERE IN THE WORLD IS THE ICM???
Sorry for the rant....but I may just fill the thing with tanerite and shove it into my pond and start finding out if my marksman skills are what they once were.
