I just purchased a 1995 Seaswirl with the Volvo Penta 4.3GLPHUB model motor. The Volvo Penta engine database indicates this motor was manufactured from 1994 to 1995, and is rated at 160 hp. The database indicates that other models of the Volvo Penta 4.3GL motor manufactured in 1995 (models PNCA, PNCB and PNCS) are rated at 190 hp. What is the difference in the motors that results in the 30 hp increase?

The difference is the Vortech motor which came in in 1996 I believe. It had a different cam, and improved cylinder heads .

Re: 4.3GLPHUB engine hp

Thanks for the response. The valve covers have the word VORTEC molded across the top, so it should be a vortec motor. The serial number is T01281092 if that helps. I just bought it this week and haven't even had it in the water yet, so have no reason to believe the power will not be adequate for slalom skiing. But the family we bought it from just rode tubes and wakeboards which require less acceleration. I have researched this motor on the web and can't seem to find anything that would explain the 160 hp rating. Appreciate any help figuring this out though. Thanks

Interesting, a Volvo model number (4.3GLPHUB) and an OMC serial number (T01281092).

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the "Numbers" The same exact engine the year earlier was 190 hp, the same exact engine the year after is 190 hp. My guess is a typo in Volvo's data base.

Well, I have also reserched this. I have a 1995 Wellcraft 182SS with the same engine. It is rated 160 HP at the prop with a 2bbl, 185 at the prop with a 4 bbl. The 190 rating is at the engine output shaft. Prop rating is the one to go by. I hope this helps you out. Vortec on the valve cover is 2nd design 4.3 with the balance shaft. It does not have the high out put heads. OMC/ Volvo did not use these till 1997.
Happy boating!

Sorry selmahotrod, I must have hit send with my response to Don right when you sent your information. I was replying to Don and want to thank you for weighing in. I am still puzzled by the volvo penta site engine database that indicates the 4.3GL motors manufactured from 1995 to 1996 with the model number PNC(A,B and S) are listed as 190 hp. I guess they must have the high output heads as well. Thanks again for the help.

If you have the composit valve covers that say Vortec on them, you have a 190 hp engine. Same as MD model (94), same as EF models (00).

Vortec on the valve covers in 1995 were not the hipo heads. Volvo did not use them till 1997. They were second generation 4.3l with the balance shaft. It came out in 1992 or 1993.
