I have a 99merc 4.3 when running on muffs in the driveway there is a light blueish white smoke coming out of the exhaust. Its not smoking bad but its enough to notice the engine is not taking in any water so its not steam and it dosnt smell like oil burning but I guess it could be. Any thoughts on what could be causing this.could it be sticking valves the engine otherwise runs fine

Re: 4.3 smoking

if its blue-ish grey its oil burning smoke.. on cold-ish days an engine will produce white-ish steam "smoke" without any problems.. for every gallon of gas burned a gallon of water is produced.. on a coolish day u will see it.. its normal..

oil smoke will build up at idle and get noticable after several minutes of running.. if it isnt much dont worry about it.. bore.. ring.. or valve-guide wear.. is the cause of it..

its noticable at idle cos with the throttle basically closed there is more "suck" to draw it up past the rings or down past the valve-guides..

as i say if it isnt much.. dont worry about it..

trog100

ps.. as i understand it boat engines are built loose and consume a little oil as normal.. i aint entirely sure with this one thow..

no not the impeller burning. I do have a hose hooked up to it. What I ment is that there is no water leaking into engine.

I would suggest running the boat under normal conditions (in the water).Keep an eye on temperature, and check oil level often. If it is using oil, there is a problem. Some history would be helpful: did you just buy this boat, how many hours are on it, was this the first start-up afer being winterized ? Is it possible the gas may have too much "preservative" ?
