Hello Forum!!

I have a 1989 Wellcraft 180 Classic with a 175HP 2BBL Mercruiser in it with mercruiser controls. The control is the type that has a up and down toggle switch for trim,a square button trailer switch and a push button at the pivot point for throttle only. The problem is when I try to cold start the engine I push the button for throttle only, advance the throttle to WOT to set the choke and prime the carb and return the throttle to the 11 o'clock position. When I turn the key all I get is a "click" no starter. If I advance the throttle to the 10 o'clock position bingo the starter cranks and the engine starts, at way to many RPM's. This is the only time the throttle gives me any trouble.

Ricochet, I think you have a low voltage problem in the Mercruiser Control wiring. If the solenoid clicks, the starter should spin, unless the voltage on the primary side of the solenoid is too low, or it has a bad ground. My '88 suffers from a solenoid click, no start condition no matter where the throttle lever is. This usually occurs when the boat has not been used in a while and the batt voltage is less than 12 V. I "jump" the starter slave solenoid, start the motor, and when the motor is warm, the battery is charged, I have less trouble. I think the neutral switch is corroded, but have not fixed it.

i think you have a bad connection

if the netural saftey switch was not compleateing the cranking circut you would not get a click it should be nothing but it is possable the control is worn and makeing a bad connection at 11 oclock

you need a wireing diagram and meter to check if its in the control or futher along by the motor

tommays

Ricochet. I agree with the above posts. Just wondering, if you leave the throttle in the position that you described, what happens if you repeatedly try the key (several times), does it ever turn over or just click ?

I had a similar problem with a 83 Chaparral 228HP Mercruiser. Its problem was in the trim circuit, every time I hit the trim switch it would blow the fuse on the trim pump. I tore into the control and the rigger had twisted the wires all up when the mounted the control, causing a chafe in the wire and when the throttle was in the forward position it would short out. Does anyone thinks this could be a similar problem.

I have to agree that it is in the control itself or the wiring imediately around the control. I would open up the control and remove it to get a look at the wiring and the neutral safety switch.
It sounds like the positive lead of the starter assist relay is a few volts down from 12V when the throttle is in certain possitions.

I had this problem with my 192 classic. On the bottom of the throttle handle there is a set screw loosen it up pull it off the spline than put it in the position that it starts. after check and make sure it is not kicking into gear when you start it if not you are fixed.

------------------
Kenny6966
