Once you replace the part, I would recommend you flush the coolant system. You can use a kit sold at auto zone or some place. That way you blow anything that is loose in the system out. The rust can flake and get in all kinds of places.

Hello guys... Wow i am having the exact same problem. I took my boat out for the first time last sunday and that happened to me as well.. The temperature goes from 160 to 240 when im idle. I was about to start a thread asking for some help but i found this one and i will check for what you told this guy to check. I have one more question though. Whats normal temperature.??? Someone told me that normal temp is and should stay around 160 . Is that true?? Or whats normal.? 240 im guessing too high right??

Yes, 240 is way too high. as far as 160 goes that would depend on if your motor is fresh water cooled (uses antifreeze) or is raw water cooled. 160 would be about right for raw water cooled 170-180 for fresh water cooled. Pull the lower unit and check the impeller. This should be changed every other year to be safe. Here are instructions for replacing it from a wise sage in a purple cape known as Don S.

Depending on your age of your drive (i.e. if alpha pre-genII), at 240 you have probably melted your water pocket cover and your shudders.

Re: 4.3 Mercruiser Over Heating

Look at post #4 in this thread: (to help identify gen II or pre-gen II)

http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser...ging-anodes-alpha-one-621398.html#post4505350

Please give us more info: Engine and drive serial numbers for a start. Thanks!

(edit: Looks like you've previously provided much if this info in your previous thread:

http://forums.iboats.com/non-repair-i-o-inboards/please-help-me-need-some-advice-637650.html

but it is always good to repeat the info in subsequent threads you start. Best of luck in getting your impeller changed out, and happy boating!)

And I would seriously look close at your water pocket cover and shudders!!!! 240 is pretty high and things like to melt when the dash gauge shows that temp.
