Re: 4.3 lx Carb Weber to Rochester

I thought all factory 4.3 4bbl. manifolds were already spreadbore, and the Weber/AFB setup was on an adapter. Quadrajets are great carbs..but it MUST be a marine carb for safety reasons.

Do not assume the carb will just bolt on and not require any tuning. I purchased an I5 carb for 5.7L and it needed further tuning. Others have found the same. Webers are generally closer and require less tuning. If you don't want to rebuild, an Edelbrock 1409 with the 4.3L kit, would be a better start. No need to worry about adapter or fuel line.

Go to your local auto parts store and get an Edelbrock rebuild kit # 1477.

It will cost you 40 bucks and they are real easy to rebuild...

It's a marine carb, I just want to make sure it will fit the manifold before ordering it.

So the Edelbrock 1409 is a better replacement? Can anyone else verify, just want to make sure.

I'd like to rebuild it to save the bucks, but the manifold choke no longer works. I'd have to get a new coil and figure out why the links/plates are binding. Like I said, I wold like to rebuild it but thought that I could get a better carb with an electric choke that's already rebuilt and drop in place with minimal tweaks.

Re: 4.3 lx Carb Weber to Rochester

Please do not buy the Ebay carb! I just looked at the ebay ad, and saw the carb was from I5. I have one of those carbs I just bought sitting in a box on a shelf in my garage. It would make a good anchor. They will throw together anything and send it out. If you order a electric choke model, it will be a automotive carb, with a few minor mods, to make it marine legal. Mine had 2 different secondary needles in it, and neither were right. It had a terrible bog when the secondaries opened, and I was told by them to bend the hanger for the needles, which is wrong. Their rebuilds are junk in my opinion. Look at some of my posts about the carb I bought from them, and some of the bad luck others have had with theirs to.

On the Edelbrock 1409, it is what I bought to replace my I5 quadrajet, and have had great luck with it. It is identical to the Weber that Mercruiser used. I have had great luck with it.

I would rebuild what you have or go with the Edelbrock. Best of luck to you!

If your main problem is the choke, consider making it manual. You probably don't need it often in FL. I don't think there is an elec choke conversion kit.

The 1409 will be the right replacement carb for what you have. It comes tuned for a sbc though. Depending on you V6, if it is gen+ or not, determines what tuning kit or parts to buy. There is a 4.3L kit that includes the right jets, rods, and springs to match what mercruiser had in the not gen+. The gen+ is about the same, a slightly different jet or rod, and spring. The info is in Merc service manual.

Given you have a mechanical choke, you shouldn't have the 3-step rod webers. So, those parts should fit. Probably also means you don't have a gen+.

Engine Model | Mercury # (Mfg) | Primary Jet |Secondary Jet | Meter Rod | Spring Color
4.3LX Alpha | 3304-9565A6 (9600) | .089 |.089 |16-6857 | Yellow
4.3LXH Gen+ | 3310-807826 (9666) | .092 |.089 | 16-6857 | Green

Note: If you have a 9666, it has the 3-step rods, different jets and plungers that are not available any more. Just use the 2-step rod and jets indicated above, in the 1409.

Thanks for the warning. I think I will either rebuild the weber or get a 1409, It's been a while (about 15 years since I last rebuilt a carb), should be fun though.

It gets a little cold now and then here in FL :D You are probably right in saying that I don't need it...just like to get things working OEM...picky about that. I dont think I have the gen+ though. As far as I can tell it's a 95 4.3LX Alpha thunderbolt IV. It all sounds like a headache trying to get the correct hardware. Maybe the solution is to buy the OEM rebuild kit and get it over with...

Buy the rebuild kit and send me your carb. I will rebuild it for free and make a video on how to do it, like this one...

PS

You don't need a choke...
I appreciate the offer. I just had major surgery three weesk ago and need to get back up to par to crawl in and get the carb out. I think I'll give it a shot at rebuilding myself. It's been a while but it's time to get tinkering with carbs again. Besides, the girlfriend said she will help  (it's never going to run again, isn't it?)

Yes, it's just the Alpha engine. I remember looking at the carb and noticing the 9600 stamped on it.
