Yes, there is better economy and better power with EFI, also quicker starts, smoother running, higher price, and increased expense when they break. Just like in the auto industry. It won't be long until all new engines will be EFI and carbs will be a thing of the past.

I assume we are talking about new boats here based on the comments about the huge price difference. As you can see there are pro carb and pro injection people everywhere. Typically EFI is easier to start, but I am also hearing great things about Merc's new Turn-Key-Start system, it is basically an electronic choke and accelerator pump in one unit that makes starting just as easy as with EFI. The fuel consumption is better with EFI but the difference is not huge, perhaps a half mile per gallon or so. As was mentioned above, when thing go wrong EFI is more expensive to repair and a carb problem is less likely to leave you stranded. However, a carb will require more attention than EFI, annual cleaning and tuning, etc. If you plan to trailer your boat to varios locales, EFI will adjust to different altitudes automatically, a carb will not. Also, EFI will have a higher resale value.

For you guys with older boats, The Vortec heads are worth 25-30hp on the V6 and even more on the V8's. They require a different intake manifold but you can pick up a set of reconditioned vortec heads for about 150-200 if you shop around.

Do you know what year they started using Vortec heads?

Vortec heads started in '96-'97. They can be identified by looking at the number of intake manifold bolt holes. The vortec's have only four holes for the IM to bolt to, while the older heads have six.
