3HP runs for a few secconds

I have a 3HP johnson J3BRESR. Starts in a few pulls and will run for about 5 to 10 seconds and dies. wait a few seconds and another pull and it starts again. The fuel tank is on the motor and is gravity fed. filter is clean, plenty of fuel getting to the bowl, tank vent is open. Rebuilt carb but still same problem. brand new plugs. Basic motor but i can't seem to get it to run! anyone have any ideas?

when you say rebuilt carb ...do you mean you added the parts from a new kit,... or soaked it overnight, pushed a small strand of wire through all the passages, sprayed it with carb cleaner, blew it out with compressed air and then put it back together?

Funny you ask... The first rebuild was the added new parts kind. This rebuild is the wire out the holes and soak kind. Ready to go back together tonight. Looking for any other ideas while i have it apart or things to try if this rebuild doesnt work. I didn't remove anything while wire cleaning. Not real confident that this is going to get it.

does the carb have the welch plug on top? if so remove it and clean the idle circuit. once the carb is cleaned properly , if the symptoms are the same, you will be able to rule it out as an issue. have you checked compression and spark?

There should be a 'drain' plug in the lower/front of the float bowl. Remove it with the fuel shut off valve open to check for full fuel flow. Remove the filler cap and note if the flow increases.

All back together and same problem still. fuel out of hose at carb is plenty. fuel out of drain plug on bowl/fuel shut off is a drip at best. seems after a bit the bowl will fill and it will run but fuel supply wont keep up. replaced all parts in shut off/ delivery and not sure what to try next.

So... Apparently the quart of fuel I put in before I started last night has been emptied during the carb on/off process. Put a full tank of fuel, adjusted the needle valve and she runs great.

ahhh.....the pesky "out of fuel" trouble!! glad to hear ya got it running.
