Help! I am the original owner of a 1956 Lightwin. It's probably been used 200 hrs in its life and has been in dry storage for 20 years. I just took it out and easily got it to start, but can't seem to adjust the high speed jet properly. I have cleaned everything out, mixed fresh gas (1/3 pint oil with gallon of gas). At high speed, the engine smokes oil like crazy and won't run smooth. Strangely enough, when I take off the air intake and remove the little air screen just before the carb, it runs almost perfectly.

Also, to get the engine running fast I have to set the high speed jet to the leanest setting (turned all the way clock wise).

It idles fine and that jet is set perfectly.

Any suggestions? I have sprayed enough carb cleaner. Also, have only let the engine run maybe 5 minutes.

Thanks.

Alan

You are still running too rich on the hi speed circuit, Roz (or Alan). Suspects include too high float setting, bent or broken Hi speed adjustment needle, something loose inside the carb.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB :)
