Avid fisherman and outdoor writer Dave Pickering has landed, and released, what is the biggest freshwater fish ever caught in Rhode Island.

The fish, a common carp weighing 36 pounds, would have bested the existing Rhode Island carp record by several pounds, had it been killed and officially weighed.

Funny how in Europe that would be a spectacular fish, but here in the states it gets much less attention. Here in Michigan we have some dandy size carp in the great lakes, but most folks dont even bother trying to catch them. They are really smart fish from what I have been told.

They are viewed as junk fish here. A 36 pound carp would fight like crazy, and on 15 LB test, it's a trophy for sure.

Around here, too many people consider these a 'nuisance'and leave them to die on shore. What a waste. They do put up a good fight and are fun to catch, photo, and release!

Hi all, You ever open one up?, I did and almost had an accident I was laughing so hard. The best way I can describe it is, well, goo. My buddy and I were at the cleaning station after spending what seemed like an hour bringing this 12 lb thing in on ultralight tackle.

After our decission to get rid of it as there was no way I was going to eat that!!, we threw it in the near-woods for the coons behind our rented fishing lodge cottage. TYhis was about 3am after night fishing for walleye. At about 10am I was awaken by someone pounding on the the front door. Was the lodge owner asking that we use the big drum to throw out fish remains.. Looked over his shoulder and right in front of our door on the grass was -- you guessed it, the carp. Seems the coons didn't want it either and draggged-it back out of the wooded area and left it for us. Lol !!
