HI I have a 35hp mercury outboard serial# a185333 all most stranded on lake last night! problem is when I turn key to start position starter drive kicks into flyhweel but motor wont turn over. But if I repeat on off on off starter and motor will turn over start and run fine.If battery dont go dead frist. It acts like cylinders are loaded with gas and motor wont pass compresstion strok problem with that is when motor starts turning over I have to choke it for it to start. It does not matter if motor is cold or hot. Does this some times but not allways. Maybe bad starter.Any ideas out there.

Hi, Griff.

I think you have a dirty connection in your starter high current circuit that is not allowing your starter to get full power.

Clean all connections in the high current circuit and try again.

Let us know what you find. :)

Re: 35hp mercury starting problem

Might be a worn out starter or gummed up brushes not contacting the armature. Tear into it and do some sluething or find someone who can. There can be so many variablbles.

Test the voltage at the starter main terminal and the starter housing as ground, and let us know what the voltage reads while it is exibiting the problem.

Those look like older serial numbers. I've seen starter brushes wear away and fail in a similar fashion.

Re: 35hp mercury starting problem

Thanks for your help. I figured it out shortly after I posted message. In fact a light went off in my head as I was typing message. I was using the battery that I got with the motor it held a charge so I didn't think much about it.I supposed that it was a duel purpose battery but supposing gets you into trouble more times than not it ended out being strictly a deep cycle battery with little or no cranking amps so I bought a new battery put it in and it works great. Thanks again
