I have a 1982 35 Johnson that seems to stall at idle when warm. It cranks when cold just fine and will idle good until it warms up. When it gets warm, it tries to stall. I usually pull up the warm lever and it picks back up. After it runs for a while and I shut it down it sometimes is hard to get running again. It always cranks, but immediately dies. My mechanic is saying a carb rebuild is due, but I want the real experts opinion.

Thanks for any input

Merc20,

Sometimes ign. components become sensitive to temperature when they begin to fail. Try this to determine whether its fuel or ignition related.

First thing would be be to check the spark on both cylinders, spark should be strong, blue and snappy and arc about 1/2", weak yellow or no spark needs further troubleshooting. Also inspect the ign coils and wires for any signs of cracking etc. Inspect the stator located under the flywheel for any signs of cracks or sticky, syruppy substance dripping off.

Let us know the results.

Will do, thanks.

Should I just remove the plug wire and turn it over?

The coils look pretty new. I bought the motor a year ago and the seller said he had just replaced them.

Ideally you would use a spark tester, you could do a search for instructions on how to build one. Or try it with the plugs removed and held a short distance from the block, be sure to use insullatd plyers when/if holding the plug wires. Whats the model# of your motor by the way? Rope or elec. start?
