I searched the boards but couldn't find ab answer so.......... I have a 1976 35hp Johnson that has a slight miss at slow idle and more pronounced as I move the throttle up, When I get to about 1/4 throttle she "opens" up and runs fine at mid to WOT. Anybody know what the probable culprit is?

Thanks for the help.
John

John,

Is this motor new to you? or have you had it a while and this just started happening?

Have you checked the spark yet, it should be strong, blue & snappy and jump at least 3/8" or so.

What do the plugs look like? what type are they and when were they last replaced?

When was the last carb cleaning/rebuild?

Just a few questions to get a starting point for the problem

Re: 35hp Johnson, 1976

The motor is one I have had for a while, The problem started when I noticed one of my coils dripping some type of fluid. I assumed overheating due to impeller failure so checked head pressure (ok, its >100 both cylinders), then replaced thermostat and replaced coil with another one off a spare 40hp Evinrude (same part#) and also performed a tune-up (plugs, points, ect.). Now I have this issue popping up and am not sure what it is.

Thanks,
John

Have you tried the spark test and if so what are the results? If the spark checks out then it may be a fuel delivery/restriction issue.

Its a little cold here to go out and check the spark but lets assume the spark is weak, what then? What if the spark is fine, what then?

Thanks for your patience.

John

What model#? elec. or rope start? If the spark is weak you may still have a coil problem. Those coils weren't known for longevity and replacing a bad one with another of the same vintage may not have solved the problem, they were also known for developing cracks. Even small cracks can cause problems.

If the spark is good then it may be time for a carb rebuild/kit.

The compression is good so the first place to troubleshoot is the ign. system then fuel. IMO

Big John you can swap the leads from the stator to the coils and make a spark test with coils swapped. If one has weak spark, does it follow one coil - then its a coil problem.

Did you get OEM breakers and condensers ?? I have had 2 bad new cheapo condensers to now really gave me problems, as you assume new is ok. It can also be too rich iddle mixture making it 4stroke untill it clears up , but check spark first.

The popping sound leads me to believe that you have a coil wire or something that is jumping to ground. If you can run it in the dark look for a spark to jump to the block. If that doesn't show anything then a spark test is definetly in order.

fireman57, I think you may have misread his post. No popping sound mentioned.

"Now I have this issue popping up and am not sure what it is."

All he said was the issue kept popping up.

I do agree however that the coils are probably still the culprit at this point.

Re: 35hp Johnson, 1976

Hey guys, you all are really great and very helpful.

It's the coil y'all. Yep... swapped the stator leads like G Dane said and it turned out to be the opposite coil of the oozing coil I reomved earlier. Even though there was no visible signs of damage to this coil it still did not check out. I'll put another coil on it and see if that cures it.

By the way.. I have a 40hp Evinrude WorkTwin motor that DOES NOT have a serial # on it that I can find. How can I identify the year so I can get parts?

Thanks again for your help,
John

Have you tried locating the aluminum freeze plug on the engine block? The #'s may be located there

Sorry Big John, MCM is right. You would think after all these years I would learn to read slower.
