I need help with 81 Evinrude 35hp. It will fire
and run in neutral for only a few seconds and then
die. If I shift it in to gear quickly it will
run until I turn off the ignition or shift it back
to neutral. This is a 2cvl. fresh gas, plugs, etc.

Thanks

I think what is happening is that it won't idle normally and when you shift it into gear, it raises the throttle enough to keep her running.

My brother's 100hp Johnson would not idle in neutral but if you shifted it real fast into gear and put it at about 1/4 throttle, it would run decent.

I think there is something plugged in the idle circuit of your carburetor.

Clean and reset your carb settings. on your low speed idle turn the screw in all the way gently. BArely seat it. Then back it out about 1 1/2 turns. Start the engine and turn it back in 1/4 turn at a time until the engine begins to starve and cut out. Undo it 1/8 turn at a time until you find your best idle. When you are in the carb make sure that your high speed jet is completely clear. Remove it and use a small wire (inside of a bread wrapper twist tie is good) or some compressed air to make sure it is perfectly clean.

Oh, and don't forget to put the plug in.
