I have a 81 35hp evinrude that is hard starting.
It will start with fresh plugs, however it will not idle in neutral for more than 2-3 seconds.
If I shift it immediately in to forward or reverse
it will run until you shift it back to neutral or
turn off the ignition switch. The engine will not
turn over in gear. It appears the neutral safety
switch is working. It will start and run in gear
by depressing the neutral safety switch. Is there
something I am over looking? The gas is fresh, etc.

Thank you for the help

The only thing I can think of is that your float is stuck in the carb. It floods it out at low rpm as in neutral. Take your carb apart and change the needle valve and seat. When you put the new float in set it so it is level with the carb when turned upside down. Make sure that your high speed jet is perfectly clean.

Don't forget to put the plug in.
