My chrysler will start up and run but once you get the boat going it runs full throttle and then all of a sudden it slows down and cuts off. I recently replaced the diaphram in the fuel pump.

Mine is doing about the same thing. Some say it is getting hot (impeller). some say electrical (stator going bad). I will let you know what I find.

could it be a high speed jet problem with carb.

Fill in the blanks.

My 19__ chrysler will start up and run. But, once you get the boat going at full throttle, after _______ minutes, the motor suddenly slows down over a time period of ________ seconds and then finally cuts off.

Also, answer these questions.

Does the boat cut off no matter what after you run full thottle for a while?

Or after you notice the motor starting to slow down, will the engine continue to run if you back off the throttle? Meaning it will only die if you keep the throttle at full throttle?

Is the primer bulb full and hard after the engine cuts off?

How do you get the motor restarted?

I don't know about the primer bulb.

it starts back up with a turn of the key.

If it starts back up with the turn of the key it is not overheating. If you rebuilt the fuel pump your next step will be to rebuild the carb. Iboats and napa sell a carb kit for that motor for under 20 bucks. I would start there because the electric stuff starts getting expensive. Carb kit part number is 18-7037. Take carb apart and clean real good then rebuild. Instructions come with the kit.

It did crank over slow but I think it was because the battery was dying because the battery was new from wal-mart and you know how it goes getting a battery there. This boat is also new to me so we had to get it going first so that also drained the battery some. Also the engine will idle but the rpms goe up some then down some. It also has very slow acceleration. I'm thinking that i still have a fuel pump issue.

Re: 35hp Chrysler cuts off

I have had a bad valve in my fuel pump. Getting the press fit ones out without breaking them can be tough. The valves cost about 5 bucks each and the gaskets for the valve are about fifty cents each. When motor starts to stall try the primer bulb and see if it is hard. If not I would look back at the fuel pump however it more sounds like the needle in the carb is sticking shut so the motor is running out of gas because the float bowl is not filling up. The racing you are experiencing at idle could be too lean on the carb. Just above the choke in the carb housing is a flat head screw. Try turning that about 1/8 to 1/4 inch counter clockwise. Should make it burn richer.

ok, carb is soaking. i'm gonna put it back together in the morning and i'll update then. Do you guys have any recomendations before I put the carb back together. Also how should the high speed jet be adjusted. I was told turn it cw all the way but not to tight or i'll damage the jet then back out 1 1/4 turn.

Thanks,Dan

Re: 35hp Chrysler cuts off

There is no high speed adjustment only a mixture adjustment. Good starting place for that is 1 1/4 turn counterclockwise from lightly seated. Adjustments to that should be made with engine warmed up and and in forward gear. adjust in 1/8 turn increments every 20 seconds. Start going clockwise till motor races then counter clockwise till motor stumbles then find the half way point between the two.

Re: 35hp Chrysler cuts off

Try taking the idle mixture adjust screw and spring out. Use either carb cleaner or WD 40 and spray in that hole with a straw attachement. Wait a few minutes and spray again. Then put the screw and spring back in then count 1 1/4 turns counter clockwise from lightly seated. Then fire it up again and see if it improves

Re: 35hp Chrysler cuts off

juts took the screw out and it looks like it has been broken off at the top. Looks like i'm bying a carb kit. I think they come with the screw. hopefully the other end of the screw isn't stuck in the threads. I think the screw was messed up when I let the carb soak. I'll up date when the part comes. In the mean time i'll adjust that screw. I have never worked on a chrysler before but i'm liking them more and more they seem pretty simple to work on.

Re: 35hp Chrysler cuts off

I am almost positive that screw does not come with the carb kit. Problem is that chrysler used like three different carbs for the 35 HP. What is your model number?

Re: 35hp Chrysler cuts off

Part number for that carb is FO14166 cost is around 4 bucks from mercury. Beware of ebay part. There are three different style carbs for a 35 hp and they each have a different part number for the idle adjust screw.
