the motor in my boat is a replacement of a 305. I wanted to get some specs for the new block so I checked the casting number and found this info.

Block casting number - 14101148

Info - 350, '86-'90, 4 main cap Bolts, one piece rear seal.

Could anyone give me a simple breakdown on this info?

Whats the difference between 4 bolt main and 2 bolt? One better than the other?

What about the one peice seal? I noticed some are two piece.

thanks.

4 bolt mains are great for racing and high rpm engines, but not needed on low rpm (under 5000) marine engines.
The marine manufacturers DO NOT use 4 bolt mains and it has never been problem.

The older engines used 2 piece rear seals. They aren't even available anymore.

Re: 350 sbc ID info

thanks Don,

Most of the casting numbers are 2 bolt. The 4 bolts seem to used on the vettes and, like you said, highter reving models. I'm wondering what the motor would have come out of, maybe a Truck?

Being that the 4 bolt main is good for high RPM, would that allow me to increase my current WOT max of about 4400 to 4800? Or doesn't it work that way. I've seen many different SBC's with different WOT Max RPM.

I would think the boat would perform better if it ran at higher RPM's, better hole shot.

Thanks again for the info.

WOT rpm ratings have nothing to do with 2 or 4 bolt mains. Don't forget, you are also putting those max rpms into a drive designed for less than 5000 rpm.
There is a lot more to an engine and drive setup than rpm's and # of bolts holding a main bearing on.

Ayuh,... You're reading Waay Too Much Into it.....

You've probably got a typical Chevy run of the mill pickup motor...
It probably says El Honcho Mexico on it somewhere...

There's a Build Code, stamped into the foreward starboardside corner of the block deck, right at the edge of the head...
Crack That,+ you'll have a Better Idea of exactly what components were used to build that block...

Where'd ya get this Motor,..??

Hencho en Mexico.

http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

In this link, my motor is the forth from the bottom. The Hencho... motors are listed above mine with four bolt mains but they all have two piece rear seal.

The previous owner dropped it in my boat. I have no idea what it came out of. It has been a pleasure to work on.

What's the problem? You have 4 bolt main bearings, OK, not needed but will work fine, you have a single piece main seal. Ok, so does every SBC from around that date froward.
What exactly are you wanting to know?

Anything and everything, Don

My first sbc! I can't help it. I had this thought that the motor might be a 305, previous owner wasn't that bright, so I checked the casting number which raised the questions I asked.

turned out to be the 350, like he said.

I thought the Hencho en Mexico part Bondo mentioned, and corrected by Chief, might be significant but i guess the guys were just practicing their spanish.:)

Anyway, Don, you gave me the answers per usual and I thank you.;)

It's a straight up 350 motor same as a trucks. Nice motors and have to say will give great service for you.

You going to use fresh manifolds and risers, i would new motor deserves it.

Want a link to buy them cheap?

Gonna keep it stock, no reason not to, if you want throw on a 4 barrel i would, and just don't get on it to mush, so the secondaries don't open fuel usage won't be that bad.

What you have hanging off the back of the boat?

Re: 350 sbc ID info

Thanks Chief, the motor is what it is.

It's currently in my boat in my signature. I've been working on it since last July and it keeps getting better and better. I'm still working out some minor details but I expect it to be running perfect by the end of this summer.

Funny you mentioned the 4 barrel carb. It's got a worn out Q-jet on it now and I can't decide to have it rebuilt of replace with an edelbrock. Oh well, that thread has been started too many times.:)

Thanks again for your input.

replace with an edelbrock

Ayuh,... That's pretty much what Mercruiser did.... The Weber is a Carbon Copy...

I think Volvo went to Holleys...
