What is the 1/4 line that is connected on the block just under the carb running just back behind the fuel pump to a spicket on the side of the motor on a 1984 35 hp>

What does it do?

Can you show a photo of what you are talking about? Since you are in the J&E forum and stated that the motor is an '84, 35hp, I'll treat any response that I might be able to give, as such.

At slow speeds, a bit of fuel "rains" out of the fuel/air charge and forms a puddle in the crankcase. That hose drains off the puddle and feeds it into the top cylinder for burning. In the "olden" days they merely piped it overboard.

Re: 35 hpvacuum line?

It's and 1984 35 hp Johnson Evinrude, and I think F__R hit the nail on the head.

I have been working on this motor for a while. and finally started it up after it died last July.

I remove the hose because it needed to be replace, after I started the motor it was spitting fuel out of it, but the motor would back fire about every 1 to sec, to the point of dieing once or twice. I used a short hose with a plug in it to prevent it from sucking air( on the block side )the backfiring at idle is gone and runs fine at high RPM. the hose i bought were to large so i will replace it this week and should be ready for water.

things I have done to it since the break down
1.rebuild starter ( broken pos wire inside, may have caused short)
2. new solenoid (because of short)
3. rebuilt carb, (yes i ran small wire through all port/holes)
4. replace wiring harness from red plug back ( because of shot)
5. rebuilt fuel pump (because motor would act like it was out of fuel at WOT last summer)
6. new plugs
7. new key switch and had to cut about 12 inches of of control (wires that had burnt do to short)
8. new water pump last summer.

The new harness has a fuse in it going to the solenoid, should there be more? or will this prevent and more elec shorts from getting out of control...lol

I think the problem was kids playing in my boat. the starter had been dragging a while. it has a rope/recoil and starts so easy i just never spent the time to fix it. I'm thinking if the key was turn in the crank position and held a while that the broken lead on the brushes was shorting and over heated the switch and the solenoid was fried closed. After I tested it and it showed a closed circuit I took it apart to see for myself. The batter was stone cold dead..

I have spent twice as much on this motor than its worth..lol and my wife reminds me often.

Waiting on warmer weather to go run it. Thur I was mowing without a shirt 70 deg and today my wife and kids were building a snow man, 31 deg this is in Texas!!!

There is only one fuse in the "hot" lead from the battery side of the solenoid. The high-amperage (starter) cables aren't fused.
